About the Opportunity
A nationally recognized law firm is seeking a strategic and collaborative Practice Manager to drive operational excellence within a high-performing Intellectual Property Litigation team. This is a pivotal leadership opportunity for a seasoned law firm practice management professional ready to elevate performance, optimize workflows, and strengthen cross-functional infrastructure within a complex legal environment.
The Practice Manager partners closely with leadership to advance strategic goals, enhance law firm operations, and deliver best-in-class practice management solutions. This role blends legal operations management, talent development, project management, and business intelligence to ensure the efficient management of complex IP litigation matters, attorney performance, and team utilization.
The ideal candidate is a proactive, data-driven professional with strong law firm economics knowledge, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to influence stakeholders across all levels. Law firm experience is required.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; J.D. preferred
- 5+ years of experience in a large law firm, including practice management, legal operations, professional development, or human resources
- Prior experience managing professional staff
- Strong understanding of law firm financial management
- Expertise in project management, data analytics, and performance metrics
- Demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, service-oriented legal environment
Key Job Functions
Practice & Section Administration
- Lead operational strategy for the Intellectual Property Litigation practice group
- Oversee budget management, financial monitoring, and expense control
- Drive IP litigation project management, including workflow optimization, milestone tracking, and risk mitigation
- Coordinate Section meetings, retreats, and strategic initiatives
- Monitor intellectual property industry trends and collaborate with marketing on thought leadership content
Professional Development & Performance Management
- Partner with Attorney Development on associate performance management
- Support the associate evaluation process and professional growth planning
- Advise on mentoring programs, training initiatives, and external professional development
- Facilitate attorney onboarding, integration, and advancement processes
Work Allocation & Resource Management
- Manage attorney workload distribution and utilization metrics
- Balance case teams for complex patent litigation matters
- Analyze workflow data to identify operational efficiencies
- Support attorneys with legal project management initiatives
Recruiting & Talent Strategy
- Assess and recommend legal recruiting needs
- Participate in interviewing and hiring processes
- Support onboarding, leave transitions, and offboarding processes
- Collaborate on paralegal management and talent development
Business Intelligence & Innovation
- Develop reporting and analytics to inform law firm leadership decision-making
- Analyze trends related to financial performance, talent management, and knowledge management
- Partner with Innovation teams to support AI and legal technology initiatives
