About the Role

Our client, a nationally recognized leader in the legal industry, is seeking a Director of Professional Development to join their Attorney Development team. This strategic leadership role is ideal for a collaborative, forward-thinking professional with a passion for talent development, career growth, and legal training innovation.

The Director of Professional Development will design and implement firm-wide professional development programs that empower attorneys and legal professionals to thrive. Reporting to the Chief Attorney Talent Officer, this individual will oversee training strategy, manage a high-performing team, and partner with firm leadership to align learning and development initiatives with organizational goals.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 10+ years of professional development experience, ideally within a law firm or professional services organization.
  • Proven leadership and team management experience.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, adapt to shifting needs, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic development and execution of a comprehensive professional development curriculum for attorneys, of counsel, patent agents, and summer associates.
  • Mentor and manage a team of professional development specialists, fostering a culture of collaboration and high performance.
  • Collaborate with firm leadership to identify competency gaps, evaluate training needs, and implement innovative, data-driven solutions.
  • Oversee signature annual Transitions Training retreats to support attorney career milestones.
  • Design individualized learning plans to support lateral integration, career progression, and performance goals.
  • Champion adoption of modern learning technologies, including e-learning and virtual platforms, to deliver scalable, flexible training.
  • Manage CLE compliance across jurisdictions, ensuring accurate tracking, reporting, and adherence to regulations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal subject-matter experts, external coaches, and training providers.
  • Analyze program effectiveness and recommend strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Partner with administrative teams to align professional development efforts with talent retention and employee engagement strategies.
  • Develop and manage the department budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Travel to firm offices as needed to assess training needs and foster engagement.
