September 15th marked the start of Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month in the US, a month when we celebrate and pay tribute to the remarkable cultural impact, contributions, and accomplishments of Latinx and Hispanic Americans in this country. This month of recognition is an opportunity to examine and reflect on the current state of the US Latinx and Hispanic labor force.

While significant progress has been made by Latinx and Hispanic Americans in the workplace, the ongoing struggle for racial equity and advancement persists. A recent survey revealed that Latino and Hispanic professionals in corporate America feel overlooked, not accepted, stereotyped, and underappreciated at work. Only 10% of managers and 5% of executives in the US professional workforce identify as Hispanic or Latino, and 40% of mid-level managers don’t see future growth opportunities. Many Hispanic and Latinx professionals surveyed also reported that they felt it was necessary to diminish aspects of their personalities, such as communication and clothing styles, in the workplace, and more than 66% had mentors who encouraged them to do so.
