Even five years post pandemic, virtual interviews still have prominence and remain a staple in the workplace today. In fact, 82% of companies use online interviews, and 93% plan to continue conducting them to streamline and optimize their hiring processes.

If you’re preparing for an online interview, there are a few key strategies to remember. Leverage these tips as a job candidate to help you successfully approach an online interview and ensure you make a strong and memorable impression.

How to Prepare for A Virtual Interview

Preparation is key to setting yourself up for interview success- even if you aren’t leaving your home. Be sure to set a location and check your technology in advance. Select a quiet location where distractions are minimized and you are comfortable. Test your video camera and audio in your chosen location. Having a functional device and a reliable internet connection is key to preventing potential technological issues, which can be viewed as unprofessional and make you seen as unprepared. It is also important to examine the necessary software and interview platform beforehand, especially if you are unfamiliar with them.

Although you are not physically with the interviewer, it is best practice to dress formally to convey professionalism and instill a good impression. Appearing professional and poised may also heighten your confidence.

In addition, follow typical interview preparation practices by researching the company, preparing relevant examples of your experience, and compiling meaningful questions to ask in advance.

How to Introduce Yourself in an Online Interview

A strong introduction sets the tone for the remainder of the interview. When introducing yourself during an online interview, two components are to be considered: the content and delivery of your response. Your verbal introduction should be a personal pitch, a compelling and concise narrative that both summarizes yourself and demonstrates your qualifications for the role. A good framework structure to use to organize your response is the Present, Past, and Future model. Explain what you do now, followed by your background, and finally, tie that to your desire for the role you’re interviewing for.

Despite the interview being held virtually, remember your body position, the tone in your delivery, and how you project yourself. Keep in mind how you’re expressing yourself through your posture, eye contact, smile, and attitude to convey your personality and project confidence to give a strong initial impression.

Common Virtual Interview Questions

Thinking of potential questions you will be asked and practicing responses is a great preparatory tool. Here are some common interview questions and how to approach your responses.

Q: Why did you apply for this position / What interests you about the position?

Answers should show your passions, demonstrate your enthusiasm and interest in the organization as well, and how you can positively contribute to it while in this role. Highlight your skills and values that align with the organization and the position.

Q: What are your strengths?

Your response should coincide with the qualifications for the role. Provide examples that illustrate your strongest skills, and be sure to tailor them to those of value to the organization.

Q: Describe a challenging project you completed and how you overcame obstacles.

For this question, your answer should highlight your problem-solving skills. Describe the process using the STAR method and show your adaptability.

It’s important to treat online interviews with the same level of professionalism as face-to-face screenings, as they equally allow you to instill a lasting impression on employers. While they offer the advantage of being in a familiar setting, this may make it easier for you to be authentic and build rapport between you and the interviewer. However, they still require preparation and practice. Adhere to these online interview strategies to bolster your confidence and set yourself up for success.
