Many job seekers will scale back their search in the middle and later months of the year, assuming that hiring slows until January. In other cases, it’s simply a matter of not making the process a priority in their schedules. However, this is often a missed opportunity. As a recruiter, I see plenty of advantages to applying during these periods. Here are five reasons why I recommend staying active in your search now rather than waiting.

1. Specialized Skills Are Always in Demand

In fields like law or other professional services, many employers are actively looking to fill niche roles that require specific experience or certifications. If you bring a specialized skill set or unique experience to the table, such as a relevant practice area, you could be exactly the person they’ve been waiting for. These roles may not always be widely advertised, but recruiters and hiring managers are constantly scouting for the right fit.

2. Faster Interview Processes

With fewer candidates in the mix and less pressure to sort through large volumes of applications, the hiring process during holidays often moves more smoothly for the right candidate. With fewer applicants per job posting, your resume and cover letter could have a better chance of standing out to hiring managers who are reviewing candidates. This is a strategic moment to get on their radar. As the year progresses and more employees take PTO, many teams begin to feel the strain and welcome the idea of additional support that a new hire can bring.

3. Remember: You’re Never Committed

You are never tied down to an opportunity simply by interviewing. It is your right as a candidate to see the process through without commitment. Keep in mind, a first interview is typically no more than an hour and often falls in the 30–45 minute range. In the grand scheme, that’s a relatively small investment of time for something that could potentially open an exciting door.

4. Positions You for a Strong 2026

If you’re hired in the summer or fall, you’re often able to onboard before the next quarter rush, giving you time to settle in and demonstrate value. For example, currently starting a new role in September means you’re well-positioned to contribute meaningfully during the company’s end-of-year planning and performance cycles.

5. Continue Building Relationships

Even if a role isn’t immediately available, reaching out and connecting with hiring managers or recruiters during “slower” periods allows you to establish rapport and stay top-of-mind. By the time new positions open in the next quarter, you’ve already built credibility, making it far more likely they’ll consider you first when a role matches your skills.

In short, staying engaged in your job search now can give you a real edge. Many professional skillsets are always sought after, and interviewing doesn’t lock you into anything—but it could unlock the right opportunity. Most importantly, starting now positions you to step into the new year with momentum, rather than scrambling to catch up. By being proactive when others pull back, you not only stand out, but you will set yourself up for long-term success.
